The Difference is Passion

I am currently reading The Difference. It's by Jean Chatzky. I really like her. She's the money expert person on the Today Show (or, at least, she was at one time the money expert person on the Today Show. Now I watch VH1 Classic in the morning in the hopes of catching some Steve Perry.) She's all smart like about money things, but it seems like she could be one of your best friends. But not one of my best friends. They will complain to your face about not having any money while sitting at the spa and ordering furniture from the Horchow catalogue. This is, of course, why I love them.

I expected something different from Jean. The Difference reminds me of The Secret. There are also some grammatical and content errors that surprise me. I'm not saying I don't make them here. I know I do. But I'm not holding myself out as Jean Chatzky.

Having been to high school in Austria, I still sometimes think and spell like I am writing in German. Aber, Ja.

Anyway, Jean says that you have to find your passion, and that the riches will follow. Or something to that effect (I couldn't bring myself to finish the book). I have things I am good at, like picking the perfect off-white wall color and cooking shrimp, but those aren't passions.

I DON'T HAVE A PASSION! Do you have a passion? I want a passion.

  1. Isn't "The Secret" that you just wish really hard for shit you want and it's supposed to come to you?

I mean, I feel like I've been doing that for years and I don't have anything I want, so screw you Secret.

  2. Yes, that's The Secret. Then The Secret would say to you that you must be doing something to sabotage what you want. The Difference puts in an interesting twist - it says you have to want something, but that you also have to do something toward that goal. Frankly, I'm going back to the Jen Lancaster books.

  3. The secret is about the energy you put out there...notice how positive people have good things happen and negative people never get ahead.

The Difference sounds like that book 'Do what you love and the money will take care of itself' we all read back in the late 80s or early 90s.

  4. Yes, that is what the Difference is about - but also, if you can't do what you love and make money (such as sitting on the couch watching Vh1 Classic), then love what you do.

  5. I am slowly working my way through your old posts (you always make me laugh!). School started today and until this point, I've been too busy with the kid to catch up with blogs. I mean, do you know how long it takes to open a Pop-Tart and microwave it? Yes! I know! I am a dedicated and committed parent.

On that note, with all my recently indulgent free time, I have been thinking about the next job step. Your post made the proverbial light bulb flip on. So, if you find a job opening for sitting on the couch, watching Vh1 Classic, while eating White Trash Velveeta fudge, shopping online at Nordstrom for shoes and simultaneously correcting the spelling errors of "friends'" status updates on Facebook, I am the woman.

Let me know if you want in on my business venture. 90/40 ... wait? Is that math? Hmm. Not my passion.
